40 DAYS OF LENT:  DAY #7

WORD OF TODAY:  Proverbs 7:2-3 (ESV)

...2 keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; 3 bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

THOUGHTS ON THE WORD:

These words hearken back to the petitions of Deuteronomy 6, and in particular, verse 7 of chapter 6 of Deuteronomy (7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.). Jesus Christ was obedient to the will of the Father from the moment of His incarnation until His glorious ascension to the Father’s right Hand. Jesus kept the commandments and lives. We, having died with Him in the waters of our baptism and given the Holy Spirit, are made new through His sacrifice that we too might partake of His resurrection.

Having received this most gracious and eternal gift, we grow more like Christ daily. Emulating Him, we desire to keep the commandments of God, and His teaching as the “apple of our eyes”. Or do we? Are the commandments and teachings of God bound on our fingers such that everything we reach out and touch reminds us of them? Are they written on the tablet of our hearts?

Consider today how you might place the commandments and teachings of Almighty God upon your heart and bind them upon your fingers. Today, what might you offer as a fast from self, and what might you give in love of God’s commandments and teachings?
